Venous thromboembolism risk assessment and prophylaxis in Cape Town

01 February 2022

Venous thromboembolism is widely regarded as the most preventable cause of inpatient morbidity and mortality in the world. Authors from the University of the Western Cape reviewed medical records of 380 patients in the medical wards of two district hospitals and one regional hospital in the Cape Town metropole, Western Cape. Their research reveals a shocking underutilization of thromboprophylaxis in vulnerable hospitalized patients.

We congratulate A Wehmeyer, R Coetzee and Dr J McCartney on bringing this issue to the fore once again.
